Why People Are Using Green Screen Studios Today
If you have been following our blog series, you would have seen plenty of mentions on virtual events. After all, it is an emerging trend today as people are catching on to this new and innovative way of attending an event.
And today, we will be covering a prominent part of most virtual events, which is the green screen studio.
What Is A Green Screen Studio?
As you can see in the picture above, it is a studio space with either a backdrop system with a green cloth or a green-painted wall known as Cyclorama wall. Through the use of customised technology named “Chroma Key”, you can incorporate digital backgrounds during the filming.
How Did Green Screen Studios Rise To Significance?
In the quote of the famous Russian Socialist Nikolay Chernyshevsky, “Whatever field of human activity one may take, only those trends that are in harmony with the needs of society show rapid progress.”.
With live events prohibited due to Covid-19, the industry went in search of solutions to stay relevant. Virtual meetings and events emerged and asserted themselves as an alternative to live events and they have been popular ever since. Green screen studios were then used to customise and innovate events to a high degree, further highlighting their importance.
When Would You Need To Use A Green Screen Studio?
Where we are right now, there will be instances where you need to conduct meetings on virtual platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, just to name a few. And if you are intending to facilitate a session for your staff by having a guest speaker, you certainly do not need to engage a green screen studio for that.
The need for a green screen studio comes when you have to facilitate a virtual session with multiple segments to showcase for your audience. To simplify it with an example, it might mean having an event where you have a guest speaker, an award segment, and even having your audience to split up for breakout sessions. All of these require seamless transitions for the event to be presentable, which we would suggest engaging an event organiser, as well as a green screen studio to help with that.
Who You Get When You Rent A Green Screen Studio?
We will break down the various roles and their scopes of works in the following:
Visual Operator: He/She will be the one handling all the live-streaming software such as VMix, OBS, StreamYard, etc. The person-in-charge will also be responsible for optimising the technical specifications of the live-streams before the show commences.
Visual Assistant: He/She will be the one handling the PowerPoint slides, the videos that you would need to present during the event.
Audio Operator/Assistant: He/She will be in charge of the technical specifications of all audio equipment that is involved in the event. For example, he/she will have to make sure that the speakers do not produce buzzing sounds and to optimise the audio output on the streaming platform.
Director/Producer/Showcaller: This role will be responsible for directing the show by the film sequence, as to which segment goes next, the stage movements, and more. He/she will also ensure that the segment moves from one to another seamlessly for the audience watching.
Lighting Specialist: You do not need to engage one as per the default set-up of the lighting system in the green screen studio. However, should your event require changing of lightings from segment to segment, you do need to engage one to facilitate the changes.
Cameraman: An usual production in a green screen studio only requires one camera in a vantage position, hence you do not necessarily need to have a cameraman. However, if your event requires profiling of the stage from multiple camera angles, or roving camera shots, you would need to engage one for that.
So Why The Need To Use A Green Screen Studio?
Some of our clients have often mentioned that they would like the event production to be conducted in their offices or event spaces, as they would like to minimise their travels. However, by doing so it will incur more costs for them as they would be charged for set-up fees as compared to having the production done in the green screen studio. If plenty of rehearsals are required, it would also be more economical to use a green screen studio instead.
Another point that we would like to raise, would be the network specifications between an external space (e.g. offices) as compared to a green screen studio. In the studio, the network specifications have been set to facilitate the various streaming platforms without any interruptions. However, for external spaces, the streaming platforms might be interrupted or blocked due to firewall settings.
